Turbo Trac's Technology: Automotive Applications
Previous Page: Turbo Trac Technology: Fuel Economy
Trucks are the workhorses of our economy. They move goods cross country or across
town, transport people to work, and bring goods to the shelves. They have a profound
effect, both environmentally and economically. Trucks and companies that depend on them
face increasing economic, environmental, and regulatory pressures. High fuel costs take
their toll. Environmental performance is a challenge. Fleet operators, truck manufacturers,
and powertrain suppliers are working to bring new products to the market to meet these
challenges.
The main focus of Turbo Trac's patented design is on the heavy-duty market where there
are no other competing CVTs or IVTs. Turbo Trac's design is equally applicable to
passenger vehicles, especially in applications where high torque is required.
Heavy-duty vehicles are under heavy scrutiny from regulatory agencies that are requiring
truck and engine manufacturers to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency. In
countries that subscribe to the Kyoto treaty, the need to reduce GNGs is particularly
urgent. These trends are having a significant impact on the heavy-duty vehicle industry.
Many new and advanced transportation technologies are making their way into the
commercial marketplace to address these concerns: better, more fuel-efficient vehicle
engines, cleaner diesel and alternative fuels, and advanced powertrain transportation such as
HEVs and CVT/IVT systems.
The annual market for worldwide heavy-duty commercial vehicles is approximately 3.7
million units, according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers
(OICA). According to WestStart/CalStart, approximately 50% of these are in high need for
advanced power train technologies such as CVT/IVT. The market is global, with
exceptional demand from emerging fast growing markets of Asia and India. At an average
value of $17,000 per transmission system, the annual market for advanced transmission
technology is US$ 31.5 billion.
Turbo Trac initial target markets are transit bus, school bus, delivery fleets, shuttle buses,
specialty heavy trucks and tour buses.
